copa ColumnSaturday, April 5 | Meet the Copa Girls at the Morelli House An Open House Event 

Former Copa Girls, the glamorous women who were the iconic symbols of the Sands Resort, will be on hand to greet visitors, reminisce and answer questions about their careers. Junior League docents will guide tours of the Morelli House, located at 861 East Bridger Ave. Free and open to the public, this Open House is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Friday, May 9 | LVA Unplugged: Alive from the Copa – Jazz Concert “The Rat Pack and the Sands” – Pre-Concert Lecture 

Dr. Michael Green, historian, explores the culture of the Rat Pack and the Sands in a free lecture at 5:30 p.m. in the Lowden Theater of the Performing Arts at Las Vegas Academy High School. Next, enjoy a classic ‘Copa Room’ concert at 7 p.m. (tickets only $8) performed by The LVA Jazz orchestra, directed by Patrick Bowen and guest vocalist, Marlena Shaw. A reception and guided tours follow at the Morelli House hosted by the Junior League. The program is co-produced by the Junior League, the LV Academy High School, and Nevada Humanities on the Road Program.

Saturday, September 20 | An Evening at the Copa: A Century of Sinatra An Evening of Cultural Insight and Pure Entertainment 

Celebrate the Sands’ most legendary entertainer Frank Sinatra with author, Tom Santoprieto and singer, Tony DeSare at the Historic 5th Street School, 7:30 p.m. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. enjoy dancing and no-host cocktails. Following the performance, enjoy a night-cap at the Morelli House hosted by the Junior League. This free public program is co-produced by the Junior League and the City of Las Vegas Department of Cultural Affairs.

Saturday, October 25 | The Sands: A Place in the Sun Museum Exhibit and Opening Program 

Beginning at 1p.m., distinguished historians Dr. Larry Gragg, Dr. Eugene Moehring, Su Kim Chung and Dr. Michael Green discuss the Sand’s impact on Las Vegas development during the 50’s and 60’s. The exhibit showcases the modern visual branding strategies used by the Sands throughout their entertainment promotions, architecture, décor, and advertising. This free public program is co-produced by the Junior League and the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas.

 

The Sands and the Copa Room, A Commemorative Scrapbook Audiences at all Sands Copa Connection Programs will enjoy a free commemorative scrapbook while supplies last. Made possible, in part, by Nevada Humanities, a state agency of the National Endowment of the Humanities.
