A Century of Sinatra

Due to enthusiastic response, the September 20th “An Evening at the Copa: A Century of Sinatra” event is SOLD OUT, and our waiting list is now closed as well.

  • IF YOU HAVE A TICKET: We are so glad you are planning to join us! Your tickets will be waiting at will call when you arrive at the Historic Fifth Street School on September 20.  Please be sure to check-in by 7:10 p.m. to receive your tickets. All unclaimed tickets will be given up and distributed to stand-bys starting at 7:30 p.m. If  you find that you will not be able to attend the show as planned, we ask that you notify us, since we have a lengthy waiting list of others who would very much like to attend and would be grateful for your tickets! Please alert us to your change of plans by contacting us at info@jllv.org or at 702.822.6536 during Junior League office hours (9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mon-Fri).

The earlier you come and sign in, the better your chances. We will be opening the gates at the Fifth Street School on September 20 at 6:30 p.m.

Also, please mark your calendars for the next Copa Connection program event, “The Sands: A Place in the Sun,” on October 25, 1:00 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas. This event features an opening program and reception for a special exhibit about the Sands, the Copa Room and their impact, presented by four historians and authors of Las Vegas mid-century histories: Dr. Michael Green, Dr. Larry Gragg, Dr. Eugene Moehring and Sue Kim Chung. There is no charge for this event, but advance reservations are required. Please call702.822.8735 beginning September 14 to register as a guest of the museum for this event.

What is the event about?

“An Evening at the Copa: A Century of Sinatra” is about the former Sand’s resort and its Copa Room and about its most legendary entertainer, Frank Sinatra.  It is the third program of a public history series about the Copa Room that the Junior League is presenting this year in connection with its historic Morelli House that was originally owned by Antonio Morelli, the orchestra leader at the Copa Room from 1954-1972.

What is the performance?

The stories and songs of Frank Sinatra will be presented by Tom Santopietro and Tony DeSare.  Tom Santopietro is an author of books about mid-century entertainers, including Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, and Barbara Streisand. He was selected as the winner of the New York Time’s editor’s choice award.   Tony DeSare is a singer and pianist who has appeared at Carnegie Hall in New York and many other concert halls across the country including our own Smith Center.

What is the date, time and place?

Saturday, Sept 20.  Pre-Performance Sinatra Party 6:30 P.M. , Performance 7:30 P.M.—at the 5th Street School, 401 S. Fourth Street  and a  Post-performance nightcap reception at the Morelli House at approximately 9:15.  The Morelli House is located at 861 E. Bridger Avenue.

How much does it cost?

The event is free, but tickets are required. Tickets are limited to two per person or email account.

How do I get tickets?

Beginning Sept 2, reservations for tickets are available online at www.artslasvegas.org . When you go to the event, you need to go to will-call to get your tickets that will be filed under your name or email account name.

Can I get more than two tickets?

Because of the computerized reservation system, you will need to have someone else go on the website to get their two tickets under their name.

Is there reserve seating?

No, except for certain dignitaries, there is open seating on a first come, first served basis.  The doors of the theater will open at 7:15 P.M.

Where can I park?

There is parking available in two places near the 5th Street School.$3.00 parking for the event is available in the city garage (entry on Fourth Street between Clark and Lewis) and in the parking lot on Clark between Fourth and Lewis.

Will there be refreshments at the event at the 5th Street School?

Yes, there will be two no-host bars at the 5th Street School where you can buy cocktails and soft drinks.  There will not be food available. Food and beverages will be served at the complimentary nightcap reception at the Morelli House following the performance.

What is the attire for the event?

Though any attire is acceptable, the audience is encouraged to wear vintage Vegas cocktail attire to help set the mood of the Copa Room.

What is the Sinatra Look Alike Contest about?

To add to the fun of the event, we will hold a Sinatra look-alike contest before the performance starts, for those who’d like to come as Frank Sinatra.  There will be a prize for the first place winner.

What other activities will take place during the pre-performance Sinatra party?

The Las Vegas Downbeats band will play Sinatra tunes for those who wish to dance.  There will be a vintage photo exhibit in the Mayor’s Gallery. A videographer will be on hand to record people’s memories of the Copa Room and of Frank Sinatra.

Is there handicapped access?

The 5th Street School has handicapped access to all areas. Unfortunately, the Morelli House does not because it is an historic preservation project.  There is a one-step stoop at the front door.

What and where is the Morelli House?

The Morelli House is an historic preservation project of the Junior League that relocated the house in 2001 from the Desert Inn Country Club Golf Course estates (now the Wynn Resort) to 861 E. Bridger Avenue in the city’s historic district.  It is at the corner of 9th and Bridger.  The House, built in 1959,  is a classic example of mid-century residential architecture and was originally owned by Antonio Morelli who was the orchestra leader at the Sands Copa Room from 1954-1972.

If we decide to go to the nightcap reception where can we park?

The Junior League has made arrangements for people to park their cars in a parking garage that is located behind the house.  There is no charge to park.
